When markets perceive that conditions, such as high unemployment or a weak banking system, compromise the central bank's willingness to defend the currency peg by raising interest rates, speculative attacks are more likely to succeed. In this case, we shall compare and contrast two legends by different authors, epic of Gilgamesh and the legend of King Arthur. Although these two literary texts have comparisons, they also have differences. The outstanding difference is that one is an Epic and the other is a legend (Danny 4). To compare and contrast the epic of Gilgamesh and the legend of king Arthur, one must first know what the words epic and legend mean. Basically, epic is a long narrative poem about the deeds of a semi-god, also known as a superhuman hero whose actions are depended on as fate of a nation, tribe or human race ( Danny 6).This usually consists of adventure of a filled plot and is concerned with timeless human challenges ranging from honor, jealousy, hatred and war. These contain gods and goddesses and the setting is fixed in a far distance place at a time long past. Epics are based on legends and myths. A legend, consist of a superman who manages to solve some problems that a group of people have encountered for long. It also consists of an adventure filled plot. Having known that, there is now a better understanding of these two stories (Danny 10). Eric of Gilgamesh is a story that revolves around Gilgamesh king of Uruk, who was two thirds god and one third men. He was physically beautiful and, very strong and very wise. His kingship was so cruel and he lorded over his subjects, raping any woman whether a wife or a daughter of his noblemen or warrior (Danny12). He accomplished building his projects through forced labor. His subjects complained to the gods and they decided to keep him under checks by creating Enkidu magnificent just like Gilgamesh. The two became good friends and Gilgamesh felt so bad when Enkidu dies from an illness inflicted by the gods. Upon the death of his friend, Gilgamesh travels to the end of edge of the world and learned about the days before the deluge and other secrets of the gods, and he recorded them on stone tablets (Danny 14). The epic begins with Enkidu. He lives with animals, suckling their breasts, grazing meadows and drinking at their watering places. The legend of King Arthur is a narrative that revolves around Roman Empire and its fall as their armies flee the British isle. Arthur, a heroic knight and devoted Christian, is torn between his desire to travel to Rome to serve his faith and his royalty to the land of his birth. As England falls apart, Arthur throws his lot with a band of knights who hope to restore order to their fair and pleasant land and hopes to win freedom for his comrades. With time, Arthur and his men join forces with Merlin, a shaman whose band of renegade knights were often pitched in the battle against roman forces. Forming a united front as loyal English men against the invading Saxon armies, Arthur, Merlin, and the brave beautiful Guinevere are determined to unite a sovereign Britain under one army and one king (Morris et al 55). The legend of King Arthur is in comparison to the epic of Gilgamesh because Arthurs closest companion was Merlin while Gilgameshs closest companion was Enkidu and neither of these two forgot their friends. Enkidu only came into contact with Gilgamesh after becoming a man. Enkidu released the animal traps when they are caught, so to make him a man the prostitutes slept with him so that the animals would be ashamed of him and reject him. King Arthur became aware of Merlin when he was still a young man (Morris et al 62). When Arthur was born, Merlin placed him in the care of sir Ector, throughout his boyhood; Arthur learned the ways of chivalry, knighthood and how to become a gentleman. At the tournament one day Arthur pulled Excalibur from the stone and this is what brought upon Arthur meeting Merlin once again. In the legend of King Arthur, Merlin exclaimed that if men forgot it was their doom. Gilgamesh along with Enkidu together fought and killed humbaba, protector of the cedar forest, and the bull of heaven, sent as punishment to Gilgamesh for killing Gilgamesh. Neither King Arthur nor Gilgamesh forgot their faithful friends. King Arthur fought many battles with Merlin at his side, supporting him using magic to help Arthur gain a better understanding of the world. Upon the death of Enkidu, Gilgamesh searched a long time before finding the secret of eternal life, but he was unable to return it to Enkidu to restore his life to him. When Merlin was frozen from Morgannas twisted magic, King Arthur thought that Merlin deserted him. (Morris et al 68). In conclusion, there are many distinct comparisons as well as contrasts that are seen in these two wondrous narratives. Some of which include the diverse contrast of the type of literary writing and the correspondence of the faithful companions of both Gilgamesh and King Arthur. This is why The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Legend of Arthur are the same yet unlike. Although there are so many similarities between The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Legend of King Arthur, there are so many differences. Through the use of a series of examples, I will make my point that both the human race and nature are considered to be equal in array of aspects that are debatable. Through a series of questioning from the child that is reflected back to the child by the speaker, the speaker attempts to take a crack at the meaning of nature’s evidence. E.g. in section 6 the child poses a question which seems to be directed at the speaker, " what is this grass?" Fetching it to me with full hands; How could I answer the child? I do not know what it is any more than he."(99-100) The tone the speaker held was once jubilant and self-praising that ousted the need for criticism of natures grass or it’s flags, and stated " I celebrated myself, and sing myself, â€Å"(1) He does not question and analyze the world as it evolves and blossoms around him until he m oves from his loafing phase. Instead the speaker insists upon observing the motions of nature for example " I loafe and invite my soul, I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass."(4-5) This simple observation is not matched with any sort of debate from the speaker. The two females that I will be highlighting are two of the younger musical talents that are out in the industry at this time. They both worked hard to get to where they are today by starting off with many of the same dreams and aspirations many of us women share. It's especially nice when you can relate to the message that the singer is trying to provide. Sometimes it's almost as if the person is singing about your life or a situation that you are also going through. Music can heal, it can bring joy, pain, forgiveness, and realization to many of the problems we face today as women, or just as people. The first talented musician that I would like to talk about is a beautiful young woman who is pretty new on the scene, Miss Alicia Keys. Alicia Keys, who is biracial, grew up in Manhattan, New York, with her ultra-supportive mother, who put Alicia through piano lessons at the age of five. She studied classical music, and grew up to collaborate it with a jazz/hip-hop/R&B soul kind of sound. Not only can this girl sing and play the piano, she also writes her own music. The third policy would work by the government placing a ban on all anti-satellite tests which are heavy releasers of debris. Buying insurance acts like a tax that will increase PMC to social optimum. . c) The free rider problem: The free rider problem in the article is where the ‘orbit is open to anyone with a launch-rocket handy’, therefore some countries may improve their own well being by ‘bearing the costs of wellbeing’ while leaving other countries to pay for the debris, and causing those ‘bearing the costs’ to ‘reap the benefits’. The free rider problem comes from the fact that a public good is â€Å"non-excludable†. It’s when decision makers own well being can be improved by making others pay for the good. Satellite launches are public goods because they are neither excludable nor rivalrous in consumption. This is due to temperatures effect on yeast, as a living thing. After completing the first five trials and ending my experiment for the day, I placed the jar of active dry yeast in the fridge where, due to prolonged exposure to such low temperatures, the whole jar died. After frustratingly watching the next seven trials yield no rise in the yeast, I came to the realization that the cold of the fridge killed my yeast. This was just as much a surprise (as the jar said â€Å"refrigerate after opening†), as it was an interesting basis for my lab. Because my Lab was about Temperature’s effect on yeast expansion and growth, this death provides a good conclusion, as it shows that prolonged exposure to extreme cold(around 58 Degrees F in my fridge), effectively kills the yeast, just as exposure to extreme heat does. At the 90 Degrees of trial 1, the yeast simply was not activated, but at 130 degrees, it also didn’t activate. Because temperatures below 130(save 90) activated it, I assumed that this was the temperature that kills yeast, just as 58 Degrees does. Limitations of experimental design- Many aspects of my project did not work very well and could have been improved in order to make for a better experimental design. For instance, instead of simply placing the yeast in water, I could have made dough, and placed it in the oven at different temperatures, making for a much more stable environment and temperature. Also, completing all 25 trials would have yielded better results as to what temperature truly leads to the greatest expansion by the yeast during fermentation. ———————– [pic]

Black Comedy Free Online Research Papers I expected to go see a black comedy in Peter Shaffer’s Black Comedy. I expected that there would be in actuality a serious subject matter handled with humor; hence â€Å"black comedy†. It, in fact, turned out to be slapstick humor, played off on the literal meaning of â€Å"black† and â€Å"comedy†. Nevertheless, I found it enjoyable and entertaining. Brindsley is a starving artist, whose girlfriend, Carol, is the daughter of a stuffy, judgemental old man. The play actually begins in a dark room, where, Brindsley and Carol, intent on impressing his stuffy future-father-in-law-to-be, have â€Å"borrowed† furniture from an absent neighbour. They are also expecting for the evening, a millionaire by the name of George Bamberger, deaf (to add to the humor), who also happens to be an art collector. Just as they are getting done setting up the room, a fuse blows out sending everyone into the dark. As the lights go full-on on stage, you realize that their life has been lit up until now, and as our lights have gone on, their room has gone completely dark. Once the room is dark, typical, predictable neighbours start showing up, starting with a neighbour, an old lady who I believe was a preacher’s daughter, showing up before the expected father-in-law. Colonel Melkett, the typical difficult father, is completely unimpressed by Brindsley. To make it funnier, the neighbour whose furniture has been stolen comes home early, unexpectedly. Desparately not wanting to get caught in his little funny web of lies, Brindsley brings Harold, the furniture owner over too. Then to make matters worse, Brindsley’s mistress shows up for a rendez-vous as well. The rest of the evening is spent by Brindsley covering his moves, trying to hilariously get (more like slide) Harold’s furniture back into his apartment, without Harold noticing, and get his own back into his apartment, all in the dark! This is interlaced with mismanaged drinking, and a spicy meeting with Clea. When she calls, he specifically asks her not to come over. S he, however, does show up, quietly and unannounced. Brindsley, feeling his way around in the dark, finds her by recognizing the way her butt felt! The Colonel’s lighter is a prop that I found amusing. In a dark room, searching for things or people with a lighter is much like using your cell-phone in the dark to find your car keys. Subsequently, the electrician shows up, and the stereotypical characters mistake him for the deaf millionaire, thanks to his accent. The characters assume that all accents sound alike, delivering predictable laughs, but amusing nonetheless. When the lights finally do come back , Brindsley is in big trouble. His affair has been exposed, Harold has found out about his furniture and the Colonel and now Carol as well aren’t happy with him at all. This play showed that human beings come in so many layers. The simplest people, we find, the ones with the morals are the ones we find complex. and the most complex people, we tend to excuse as the most â€Å"human-like.† The most layered character of this play, in the end, is caught in his own web of lies. How does Thomas Hardy use the supernatural to engage the readers interest, build up tension and keep the story going? The Withered Arm is set in 1888 in a place called Wessex now known as Devon. It is set in a typically English rural location, mainly farms and small cottages for farm workers. There are two main characters; Rhoda Brook a milkmaid and Gertrude Lodge newly married to local landlord Farmer Lodge. Back then everybody knew each other and so knew everybodys business. Men are more respected and did all of the work whilst the women stayed at home and did the house work. If women were single they lived with their parents or on their own in a cottage. If the had a child whilst out of wedlock then they were frowned upon by society and were very much disrespected by everybody else. When we are first told about Rhoda Brook she is portrayed as a woman in her early thirties who hasnt aged to well. She is a milkmaid working on a farm for most hours of the day not having much time to rest. She next did what she had been told to do and as she was doing so she found that Rhoda and Farmer Lodge were behind her, due to the person who had been hung was Rhoda and Farmer Lodges son. Gertrude was taken to prison and then thrown out on the street where she died three days later. There are a small number of characters in The Withered Arm the three main characters are as follows: Farmer Lodge, Rhoda Brook and Gertrude Lodge (Farmer Lodges new bride). Farmer Lodge is a very busy man who runs the farm and sells his goods from it; he has recently got married to Gertrude and are both happily settling down to married life. Rhoda Brook is a woman who lives in a cottage near by the farm and works for Farmer Lodge, milking cows. She had a son to Farmer Lodge who rejected him and Rhoda Brook. Gertrude Lodge is Farmer Lodges new bride. She is new to the area and makes friends with Rhoda Brook and her son within the story. She is obviously unaware of Farmer Lodge and Rhoda Brooks past relationship. The story The Withered Arm starts with a few milkmaids chatting about Farmer Lodges new bride. Though they say shes a rosy cheeked tisty toasty little body enough. This gives you a description of Farmer Lodges new bride using adjectives. It also only spends a short time setting the scene, It was an eighty-cow dairy, and the troop of milkers, and regular and supernumerary were all at work. Thomas Hardy also describes a lot about Rhoda Brooks cottage using many adjectives and a simile, It was built of mud-walls, the surface of which had been washed by many rains into channels and depressions that left none of the original flat face visible: while here and there in the thatch above the rafter showed like a bone protruding through the skin this descriptive passage adds atmosphere and mood to the story. There is a really good description of Gertrude Lodge when she visits Rhoda in the dream, that young wife, in pale silk dress and white bonnet, but with features shockingly distorted, and wrinkled as by age. This changes the readers perception of Gertrudes character, and also helps establish the character and the plot of the story, thus creating atmosphere for the reader. The story has a mystery and slight-horror side to it, which makes the story interesting and more effective for the reader. This proved to create a powerful atmosphere within the story line, often through a build up of tension and suspense. The effective ending in The Withered Arm is that Gertrude discovers that the hanged person is Farmer Lodge and Rhoda Brookss son. This is known as a twist in the tale. Her character portrays her to be loyal and loving wife to William. This story is a mystery-based story with a tragic out come at the end. A magic and supernatural feature is present through out the story too, which adds more apprehension to the story. The Superstitious Mans Story starts by telling you information in relation to the main character. William, as you may know, you could feel when he came near ee. The story seems to start right in the middle of the story and makes the reader feel as if the reader is eavesdropping on a private conversation, making the reader want to hear and read more. There is also a brilliant description of William at the start of the story, this tells the reader almost everything he/she needs to know about the character in only a few words. This adds to the story giving you a quick insight into the main character. The story starts by giving clues away that the plot is linked to death, hed not known of the bell go so heavy in his hand for years and he feared it meant a death in the parish this gives an eerie mood to the story suggestive of something sinister about to happen. There is a build up of tension when we find out his boots are still at the stairs even though hes just left the house, to her great surprise, and might I say alarm, on reaching the foot of the stairs his boots were standing there as they always stood when the had gone to rest. This is effective because this moves on the story by the build up of tension. When Williamss wife finds him asleep there is a good example of a simile, as sound as a rock. At the end when William actually dies his fellow-mower saw a miller-moth come from his mouth and fly straight away. The effective ending in The Superstitious Mans Story is that William actually dies and his spirit is seen at a different place at the time of his death. The miller moth is a sign of death and is his spiritual presence. I enjoyed reading both of these stories due to them both being written by the same author, Thomas Hardy. Both stories were based on the same style, Thomas Hardy using imagery and description to create various effects. They both had good examples of adjectives and similes within them and good story structures. The mood of both stories was eerie and sinister, suggesting something serious was about to happen.
